Aftershocks are continuing to rattle the lower North Island, with a magnitude 4.3 quake hitting this afternoon.
GeoNet said aftershocks could be expected for weeks following the magnitude 5.8 quake that struck on Monday night.
There were no reports of serious damage from the initial quake, but it was felt widely in the central and lower North Island.
The latest aftershock at 2.09pm today struck 60km east of Porangahau at a depth of 32km.
