The effects of the February 22 Christchurch earthquake are still being felt in Canterbury, with residents enduring a string of aftershocks overnight.
A 4.1 magnitude quake hit 10km south-east of Christchurch just after midnight at a depth of 11km.
It was the largest of seven aftershocks that struck the region since 6pm yesterday.
Most of the shocks were measured at more than magnitude 3 and concentrated at a shallow depth around Lyttelton and southern Christchurch area.
One 3.2 magnitude quake struck near the site of the original September earthquake in Darfield around 3:30am, at a depth of 9km.
