Sometimes a pint and a bowl of chips just won't cut it. After a hard day at the office, the best way to wind down is to relax in the early evening light, sipping a chilled flute of Champagne and nibbling on classy canapes.
Krug Champagne and The Grove restaurant have introduced an idea we can't resist. TKIF (Thank Krug it's 5 O'Clock) is an after-work drinks concept with canapes provided by top chef Ben Bayly.
"Champagne and other sparkling wines are not just great party wines, they're also the most versatile for pairing with food," says The Grove's Michael Dearth. "Krug Champagne showcases wonderful minerality, a characteristic that adds depth to fruity, savoury, meaty and gamey flavours. And it possesses an unparalleled acidity that cuts through rich, fatty dishes and even high-acid ingredients."
On the menu you'll find delicious-sounding bites such as tuna and soft-shell crab ika mata, quail eggs bene with West Coast whitebait, and mango lasagne with fromage frais. All paired with Krug Champagne, of course.
• TKIF, daily at The Grove's new bar space, 43 Wyndham St, City, until February 28. Ph (09) 368 4129 (reservations not required). Krug, $65 by the flute, $350 by the bottle.
