Environment Waikato is planning the largest aerial possum control operation ever undertaken.
An aerial drop of 1080 poison will be made over 81,000 hectares of the Hauhungaroa Range, west of Lake Taupo, from May to September this year.
John Simmons of Environment Waikato said possum numbers are growing, causing a TB problem as well as fears for native plant and wildlife.
The project will cost around $3 million.
