Advocate for young women dies

Renowned educationist and academic Dame Dorothy Winstone has died.

A family notice in the Herald today says Dame Dorothy passed away on Thursday.

She was well known for her work as an educationist, and is a former Auckland University pro-chancellor.

In 1990, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Dame Dorothy is widely known for her work in encouraging young women and was a big supporter of the Young Women's Christian Association in Auckland.

She also sat on the 1975-77 Royal Commission on Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion whose report led to the passing of the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Act.

A service to celebrate Dame Dorothy's life will be held at St Mary's in Holy Trinity, in Parnell, on Wednesday.
