After hearing of the accident, many people quickly donated to help Mr Docherty's family with medical costs.
They have already raised $15,579.29 on the Giveforward website, a fundraising site similar to the local Givealittle site.
Mr Docherty was described as "one of the best, most lovable and adventurous guys that one could know" by a friend who started the "Corey Docherty Awareness" fundraising effort.
"We all love Dickey Doc and our prayers are with him. They say a smile lights up a room and he definitely has that smile."
After hearing Mr Docherty had passed away, others made gestures to remember their friend by writing "RIP Corey" messages on landmarks in his hometown.
The page showed "RIP Corey" on bleachers beside a sports field in Marblehead, and a similar memorial message written in snow in front of a large public building.
Heartbroken friends and mourners have also shared their recollections of Mr Docherty on a memorial Facebook page and other social media outlets.
"You were one of the nicest most genuine people," one wrote. Others described him as a "beautiful soul" and a man with a great sense of humour.
Various online sources indicated Mr Docherty attended Marblehead High School, then graduated from Roger Williams University last year.
He also had family in Santa Barbara, California.
Police said it was initially believed Mr Docherty suffered a fall but Detective Lisa Watt of Queenstown Police said the incident was still under investigation.
Mr Docherty had suffered injuries to his back and head.
Base Backpackers has not immediately responded to a message and a neighbouring hostel referred questions to Base and the Police.
Mr Docherty's death has been referred to the coroner.
