Admiral Road made safer

REMEMBERED: A cross in place for Donald Irvine, who died in a truck crash on Admiral Road last October.

Roadworks to improve Admiral Road, Gladstone, where a truck driver died last October, are underway.

Hammond Spreading employee, Donald Irvine, 46, died after the truck he was driving went over a bank.

Police said then the retrieval and salvage of the truck was lengthy and complex due to where it came to grief and because of restricted access on the narrow road.

Carterton District Council started looking at improve-ments to the road late last year following the crash.

Council roading engineer Warwick Potts said the road was being widened and resealed.

He said a major factor in the decision to work on the road had been the truck crash.

The road is being widened on the corner of an S bend - in the past there had been no margin for driver error with a steep bank off to one side.

Mr Potts said the road works were now nearly finished.
