Adelaide's minimum overnight temperature was 29.9 degrees celsius, recorded at 7.29am, in Adelaide.
By 9.35am the temperatures had already risen above 38 degrees, with a forecast maximum of 43 degrees predicted by the Bureau of Meteorology.
The city is officially in a heatwave, with a maximum temperature of 41.5 degrees yesterday following Saturday's maximum of 40.1 degrees.
Total fire bans have been declared throughout the state today but authorities say New Year's Eve fireworks can proceed with valid permits.
