A methamphetamine addict who sold the drug to support his habit has been spared jail.
Alistair John Litt, 25, of Auckland, appeared for sentencing in the Whangarei District Court yesterday, after having pleaded guilty to possessing methamphetamine for supply, possessing cannabis and obstructing police.
Judge Michael Lance, QC, sentenced Litt to two years of supervision on the methamphetamine charge, with nine conditions, including that Litt finish a drug-alcohol treatment programme in Auckland.
Litt was convicted and discharged on the other charges.
"This is not a signal that lighter sentences are likely to be imposed on others, but you are truly an exceptional case with immense potential," Judge Lance said.
"You have really achieved at breaking the drug habit and there is every signal you will stay drug free."
Police told the court that on July 14 last year, Litt was searched in a Whangarei motel room.
Police found nine packets, each containing a tenth of a gram of pure methamphetamine or P.
