Tame Iti's son says he is doing well in Mt Eden Prison.
The veteran activist was jailed along with Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara for two and a half years, after being convicted of firearms offences following the Urewera raids.
A crowd of around 150 people protested outside the prison yesterday.
Iti'sson Wairere Iti says his father is doing as well as expected.
An appeal against his sentence and conviction is expected to be lodged tomorrow.
