There was plenty of drama when 40 riders presented themselves to the starter on Tuesday evening for the Masterton Athletics and Cycling Club's road racing cycling championship.
Raced over two laps of the Millars Rd circuit, the 60km race provided a plethora of winners for the many age-group categories. Club prize-giving will be a busy affair as a parade of riders step forward to receive their cups.
While the mass start was delayed when Earle Whitcombe was late arriving and putting out the road signs, the biggest drama was a 4WD crashing off the highway near Kokotau Bridge, finishing up on its side some distance into the adjacent paddock. By the second lap, the road was awash with police and ambulance staff with the Wellington rescue helicopter setting down in the paddock.
