KEY POINTS:
A children's playground in Auckland has been closed following suspicious damage to children's clothes.
Waitakere City Council spokesman Dai Bindoff says a boy's clothes began to disintegrate after he had been crawling around on rubber matting at the Harold Moody Reserve in Glen Eden.
He says it is as if the boy's clothes had been eaten away by an acid.
The park has been closed and a security guard has been posted to make sure no children use the park.
Mr Bindoff says the clothes have been sent for testing to establish what the substance was that caused the damage. He says the Council does not use anything that could have eroded the child's clothes that way.
He says he is only aware of one incident, but is appealing for anyone who has experienced anything similar to call the council.
