Four teenagers charged in relation to two vicious attacks on Auckland's North Shore lost their privacy when they appeared to face fresh charges in the North Shore District Court yesterday.
Glenfield teenagers Harlem Haunui Kirton, 18, Jonathon (Jono) Paul Wilson, 18, Ruaumoko Taiapa, 18, and Clinton John McGinty, 19, appeared side by side in the dock before Judge Laurence Ryan.
The group, flanked by three court officials and police, stood quietly during their brief appearance but made several glances towards supporters in the courtroom.
Two of the group wore blue police boiler suits, but Wilson appeared in the dock topless, having tied the arms of the overalls around his waist.
The charges relate to two attacks last week at Milford and Takapuna - which left two young couples with serious head injuries, including fractured skulls - and two other attacks which occurred before and after.
Kirton, Taiapa and Wilson each faced four freshly-laid joint charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
They are also jointly charged with four counts each of aggravated robbery.
A fifth boy, aged 16, from Piha, is being dealt with by the North Shore Youth Court.
McGinty and Kirton face an extra joint charge of injuring with intent and Wilson faces an additional charge of common assault.
Judge Ryan remanded the group in custody until Tuesday when applications for their bail will be heard.
Two victims from the first attack suffered head injuries so severe they both needed plastic surgery. The injuries included a fractured eye socket, a dented skull and a broken thumb and finger.
Both victims of the second attack suffered fractured skulls which they have been told could take more than six months to recover from.
