Auckland inventor Ray Avery was last night presented with the New Zealander of the Year award at a gala event in Auckland.
Mr Avery, 62, a former street kid, went on to develop low-cost, sustainable medical devices, including intraocular lenses to combat cataract blindness, an intravenous flow controller to prevent fatal drug administration errors, and a high-tech low-cost, low-maintenance incubator.
