KEY POINTS:
'Tis the season for giving, overindulging - and occupational overuse syndrome.
Hospitality and retail workers slaving through the busy summer holiday period are being warned by ACC to be careful of developing discomfort or pain.
Programme manager Chris Polaczuk said workers in those industries were particularly at risk of a range of problems including simple back pain, strains and sprains.
"With fewer people at work over the busy summer period, many employees will have to work longer hours with fewer breaks."
The problem usually develops from a combination of factors such as carrying out repetitive tasks, working in awkward positions or in an uncomfortable environment.
Mr Polaczuk said casual or seasonal workers who aren't used to carrying out certain tasks can be more at risk.
It can often occur without any obvious strain.
"The good news is that if it's attended to early it will almost always be short-term."
Regularly changing positions, staying fit and healthy, alternating and rotating tasks, stretching, and having short, frequent breaks can help prevent the problem.
Mr Polaczuk said employers and employees have a joint responsibility to prevent and manage the problem.
