Academy and Greytown picked up maximum points through outright wins when the second round of matches in the Wairarapa Cricket Association's Bidwell Cup competition ended on Saturday.
However, play was called off early in the Red Star v Wairarapa College game at Wairarapa College when it was clear there was no prospect of either side earning an outright victory there.
Red Star, who were strongly placed at stumps on the first day, therefore had to be content with first innings points. Highlight of the match were the centuries scored by Wairarapa representatives Joe Hull (Red Star) and Sam Curtis (Wairarapa College).
Academy resumed their first innings at 200-7 against Rathkeale at Rathkeale and went on to be all out for 236, giving them a lead of 137.
Wicketkeeper Dan Stevenson continued his impressive run of form by making 45 while Chad Yates made 44 and H. Shabbis 44.
The mainstay of the Rathkeale attack was medium pacer Dean van Deventer who put down 23 overs and took 6-63. Rathkeale fared little better in their second innings than they had in the first, being all out for 112 on this occasion. Again it was van Deventer who made the most impression for them, making 28, while Richard French made 19. Sharing the spoils for Academy at the bowling crease were P. Wills (2-13), Steve Coleman (2-3) and John Samuels (2-16). Academy won by an innings and 25 runs.Bowlers Glen Jonas Seth Rance and Ed Taylor spearheaded Greytown to success over
Lansdowne at Greytown by an innings and 49 runs.
Lansdowne resumed their first innings at 102-3 chasing Greytown's 308 and crashed to be all out for 153. Jonas finished with the excellent figures of 3-4 from five overs, four of which were maidens. Brock Price top scored with 25 for Lansdowne. Batting a second time Lansdowne had no answer to the combined efforts of Rance and Taylor and were dismissed for 106. Rance took 4-28 from his nine overs and Taylor 3-26, also from nine overs.
Two "tons" were registered during the second day's action at Wairarapa College, the first of them to Red Star batsman Joe Hull who was 83 not out when stumps were drawn on the first day.
He went on to make 128 as Red Star finished their first innings at 237 in reply to Wairarapa College's 145.
The onus was then on the Red Star bowlers to dismiss Wairarapa College in their second innings in time for their side to press on for an outright win but Wairarapa College had other ideas.
A superb knock of 125 not out by Sam Curtis ensured they would hold on for a draw although at 94-4 Red Star would still have been giving themselves at least an outside chance of victory. However, Curtis, who found the boundary on numerous occasions with punishing cover drives, was then joined by promising youngster Daniel Ingham and they saw the score through to 181-4 before play was called off early. Ingham was 30 not out. The most successful of the Red Star bowlers was spinner Aaron Wilson, who finished with 2-36 from his 15 overs.
