KEY POINTS:
A baby boy with non-accidental head injuries remains in a critical condition in Auckland's Starship Hospital, but is able to breathe for himself.
The four-month-old baby was taken to Starship after an ambulance was called to his home in Papakura, on the southern outskirts of Auckland, on Saturday.
He was moved out of intensive care yesterday to the hospital's high dependency unit.
"He's still in a critical but stable condition," Senior Sergeant Denise Traill, of Counties Manukau police, said.
"He's still breathing for himself, so that's good."
Ms Traill said police were focusing their inquiries on how the boy received his injuries on family members. She said they were still talking to police but that more information was still needed.
The boy's 18-month-old sibling has been taken into Child Youth and Family guardianship and has been placed with extended family members.
