KEY POINTS:
An abundance of scallops in the Coromandel fishery has allowed catch limits to be raised this season, Fisheries Minister Jim Anderton says. The total allowable catch has been increased from 48 tonnes to 165 tonnes meat weight.
The change, effective from August 24, will remain in place until the end of the Coromandel scallop season on March 31 next year. Limits for quota owners and recreational and Maori customary fishermen have all been increased.
