It was more than humming at this year's eighth annual Summer Hummer, it was positively rocking.
The biggest act in the country, combined with blissfully hot weather, set the stage for a huge evening. The brightest shining star in New Zealand music, Scribe, was in devastating form, rocking the mainly teen crowd with a force that they won't soon forget.
Unlike his formidable stage presence, Scribe in person was very approachable and he was unreserved in his endorsement of Wairarapa's premier summer concert.
"It was one of the best local crowds we have ever had before. It was awesome, a great day out and very kiwi," he said.
He was enthusiastic in his praise for the young audience who were equally enthusiastic in their reception of the young hip-hop sensation.
"I love the younger people out there getting into it. They're up there jumping around and having fun. People my age are more reserved and tend to be a little too cool," he said.
Scribe flew in from Australia for the performance and he is off to London to mix it up with the big boys of international hip-hop in the near future.
By the time Scribe hit the stage, the three lead-in acts had primed the massive crowd with performances of class and style.
Homegrown musical prodigies, Under Construction, were the first up. The band borne out of Lakeview School last year as itself was under construction, performed a very polished set of classic rock from Deep Purple to Nirvana that belied their early teen years. They were followed by the surprisingly punchy Dannevirke trio called Mana, who injected their penetrating dance beats into the massive crowd.
Next up were past Summer Hummer favourites, Fur Patrol, whose hard guitar riffs and Julia Deans' versatile vocal talents left the mainly teen concert goers hanging out for more.
"We were here four years ago and it is an awesome crowd again. From living in Australia I think every time I come back, I want to move here," Deans said.
Organisers estimated 8000 to 10,000 people attended the concert.
Masterton Mayor Bob Francis said this was the best Summer Hummer yet.
A visiting American from Washington, DC, said he was impressed with Masterton's annual concert.
"It reminds me of some of the great festivals we had down south, before they became too commercial. There's nothing like a kiwi summer hummer," he said.
The evening was not entirely enjoyable for all, as two young female members of the audience had to be treated by ambulance staff after they fainted in the crush and the heat at the front of the crowd.
