KEY POINTS:
There's no doubt it's a Kiwi, but will it have a United States passport?
This newly hatched chick was born at the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoo in Washington DC.
The chick is the third to hatch at the zoo, only one of four zoos outside New Zealand to have bred the rare bird.
A hatching at the zoo in 1975 was the first outside New Zealand. The zoo has exhibited kiwis since 1967.
Meanwhile, the 1000th kiwi chick reared in captivity as part of the BNZ Save the Kiwi operation is about to be released to a "kiwi creche".
Hupai will be set free at Bushy Park, a 98ha predator-free site in Wanganui, on Tuesday.
Once it reaches 1kg in weight, it will be considered big enough to fight off predators on its own and will be returned to the wild.
