A Christmas mailout from Dick Smith Electronics advertised the $395 Navman S100 with features including "pre-loaded fixed speed cameras".
As speed is the most common cause of road deaths - it contributed to 119 fatal crashes last year - national road policing manager Superintendent Paula Rose says her staff support any means of prompting drivers to slow down - including letting them know where speed cameras have been placed.
But she warned that she had plenty of road patrol staff whose cars were not on the Navman service.
