KEY POINTS:
An 86-year-old man died in a head-on crash in Whakatane last night.
Sergeant Ray Wylie said the crash happened at 6.30pm on Hillcrest Road when a car crossed the centre line into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
The man died at the scene and two females in the second car were taken to Whakatane hospital with minor injuries.
The matter will be referred to the coroner and the name of the man will be released after next of kin are informed.
