It's a book lover's heaven - more than 80,000 books collected throughout the year are on sale at the Variety Monster Book Fair at Alexandra Park.
The book fair didn't even open until 4pm yesterday but the most keen book buyers were waiting patiently from 9am, Variety committee member Mary McCutcheon-Walker said.
About 350 people had visited by last night with many of them being entire families with children on school holidays. "They're coming in with mum, dad and kids and then they split up and go towards books of their interest." Miss McCutcheon-Walker said it was a thrill to see people leaving with "boxes of books".
There are also games, DVDs and puzzles on offer with all proceeds going towards providing reading material and literacy aides for disadvantaged Kiwi children. Last year at least $110,000 was raised.
The Monster Book Fair will run until Sunday at the Tasman Room, Alexandra Park Function Centre. Entry is free and doors open from 8am today and Saturday and from 9am on Sunday.
