KEY POINTS:
A woman has died as the result of a car crash on State Highway 35, just south of Te Araroa, on the East Coast.
Vivienne McConnell, 79, suffered multiple injuries in the accident.
She died in Gisborne Hospital's intensive care unit overnight on Tuesday.
The car in which she was travelling appeared to have veered into the path of a van carrying two Canadian tourists, The Gisborne Herald reported.
Her husband, and boys in the car aged eight, 10 and 16 were also admitted to Gisborne Hospital, as were the Canadian couple, who were reportedly in comfortable condition.
Of them, the eight-year-old was most seriously hurt.
