About $70,000 worth of civil defence equipment has been stolen in Christchurch.
Several large aluminium tool boxes, 20 generators and 27 boxes of blankets, estimated to contain 540 blankets were stolen from the Sockburn civil defence facility over the weekend, Christchurch City Council said.
The items were worth between $60,000 and $70,000.
A member of the public spotted the break-in on Sunday, the council said. Police have been informed and are investigating the incident.
Some of the stolen items had been donated by overseas countries and local and national businesses following the February 2011 earthquake, Murray Sinclair, Civil Defence and Emergency Management manager, said.
