A large magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Southland in the early hours of this morning.
The quake was 25km deep and centred 125 km west of Tuatapere at 1.10am.
At least 170 people reported feeling the quake, with reports coming as far north as Naenae in Wellington.
A southern police communications spokesman said there were no immediate reports of damage.
