KEY POINTS:
A 61-year-old male cyclist died after falling into the path of a truck outside a Wellington secondary school this morning.
The man died outside St Patrick's College in Silverstream, Upper Hutt, after the accident at 8.40am today.
Senior Sergeant Jason McCarthy, of Upper Hutt, said the cyclist was riding in a southbound lane when the fatality happened.
Mr McCarthy said it appeared the driver of a parked vehicle had opened his door, and the cyclist had crashed into the door, falling into the path of a truck travelling in the same direction.
The cyclist, who lived in the Upper Hutt area, died at the scene.
His name has not yet been released.
Mr McCarthy said police have spoken to several witnesses and would like to speak to anyone else who witnessed the incident.
