Developers have announced plans for a $5 million "people's marina" at Parua Bay, on the inner reaches of the Whangarei Harbour.
Parua Bay Marina Developments is behind plans for the marina, about 20km southeast of Whangarei, which will offer services including power, water, fuel and a waste pump-out facility, as well as a new ablutions block and public boat ramp.
Project manager Dick Thorburn said public consultation was under way and the developers were awaiting a hydrology study of the potential environmental effects of the marina.
The company was likely to apply for resource consent by mid-August and, providing there were no delays, work would begin early next year, to be completed within nine months.
