Canterbury residents have been shaken awake by a 5.2-magnitude earthquake this morning.
The quake, which struck at 7.08am, was centred 55km north west of Christchurch and was 9km deep, GNS Science reported.
It was felt throughout Canterbury and the West Coast.
There had been no reports of damage, a southern police communications spokeswoman told NZPA.
