A small shake has been felt by some in Wellington and the South Island this morning.
The 5.1 magnitude quake hit near Nelson at 8.50am.
The quake was 110km deep.
"A decent 5.0 wobble in Wellington to kick off the last day of the year! #eqnz," Shane Harmon tweeted.
"I believe that was a little earthquake. Tiny, but just discernible if one was still lying in bed. #chch #eqnz," another person tweeted from Christchurch.
Another Twitter user said it made their parked car wobble.
