The Southland area was struck by an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale this morning.
GNS Science said today the quake hit 110km west of Te Anau at 6.49am at a depth of 12km.
The quake follows a series of aftershocks in the area following the 7.8 earthquake - the biggest in the world this year - in Fiordland last month.
