A magnitude 5.1 earthquake has struck this morning in the Kermadec Trench, off the coast of East Cape, GNS Science reports.
The quake struck at 6.58, 130km east of Te Araroa and 200km northeast of Gisborne, at a depth of 33km.
GNS science said the quake was possibly felt on the east coast of the North Island, with one report so far it was felt in Whakatane.
