KEY POINTS:
Nearly 112,000 households received rates rebates worth a total $49.9 million in the last financial year. In July 2006 the maximum rebate was increased from $200 to $500 and income thresholds for eligibility were raised. Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta said before the changes, 4200 households were receiving rebates worth a total of about $700,000.
