A strong magnitude 5.0 earthquake has jolted the central South Island this evening.
GeoNet said the 15km-deep quake struck 40km west of Twizel at 5.45pm.
It was felt as far north as Wellington, according to public reports to the GeoNet website.
GeoNet later downgraded the quake to magnitude 4.8.
