An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale rattled parts of the West Coast of the South Island early today.
The quake, centred 30km south of Hokitika at a depth of 12km, occurred at 9.04am, Geological and Nuclear Sciences reported.
GNS said the quake was likely to have been felt on the West Coast.
