Two magnitude-4.0 aftershocks have been felt in Christchurch.
The latest tremor struck at 6.27pm, 10 km south-west of Christchurch, reported GeoNet.
On Twitter, funsizepolly called it "unnecessarily long", while chiefie said: "That was a good big jolt!"
User jhartevelt said it was the only noticeable aftershock of the day.
Earlier, another earthquake struck 20 km south-west of Christchurch at 5.24pm with a focal depth of 15km.
Don Chittock from Environment Canterbury said the aftershock was "nothing too significant".
"I'm on the second floor of a building and it just swayed a bit," Mr Chittock said.
He said the tremor did not cause any damage in his building.
