4-year-old fatally hit by truck after using school pool

A 4-year-old boy had just been using a school pool when he was hit by a light truck in Pukekohe, south of Auckland, last night.

The boy was taken to Starship Hospital, but died from his injuries.

Counties Manukau road policing manager Inspector Neil Fisher the boy was part of a group that had been using a school pool and was walking to a house across the road about 8.10pm.

He was hit by a light truck travelling along Union Rd and passing Mauku School.

"We're deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life'' Mr Fisher said.

"We really hope that everyone takes care on the road this summer, both motorists and pedestrians; road safety is everyone's responsibility. We're aiming for a summer where no other families have to go through the trauma of losing a loved one.''

Police communications shift commander Inspector Ian Brooker said earlier there were a lot of people present at the crash site when police arrived.

The driver of the truck was assisting police with their enquiries.

The incident would be investigated by the police serious crash unit.
