KEY POINTS:
The second stage of the Counties Manukau police station was officially opened yesterday - 35 years after the land, on Wiri Station Road, was first bought for the project.
The new complex has allowed for the transfer of the district's headquarters from Otahuhu.
Auckland Assistant Commissioner Steve Shortland said the move to the new building meant most of Counties Manukau's top police were now based in the heart of Manukau.
Land for the new station was purchased in 1974 and there had been many "discussions, debates, collaboration and hard work" since then to get to yesterday's opening, Mr Shortland said.
More than 200 guests attended the ceremony, including Police Minister Judith Collins, Manukau Mayor Len Brown and other government officials.
