KEY POINTS:
Auckland Central has the lowest enrolment rate of any electorate in the country - more than 12,000 eligible voters are not enrolled days before the EasyVote cut-off date.
New figures from the Electoral Enrolment Centre show three other electorates in the region - Mt Albert, Te Atatu, and Manurewa - were also in the 10 worst enrolled electorates nationally.
Voters have until Wednesday to send back paperwork to make voting in November as easy as possible. People can still have their say if they enrol after October 8 but must cast a special declaration vote.
More than 225,000 eligible voters nationally were not enrolled on Friday, despite a major advertising push.
Electoral Enrolment Centre national manager Murray Wicks said the proportion of people not enrolled was comparable to that at the same time before the last election in 2005.
Mr Wicks said people aged 18 to 29 made up the bulk of those not enrolled.
Electoral officer Duncan Hutchison said he steadily signed up about 20 to 40 people a day on the streets of Auckland.
Known for calling out the "make it count" slogan when approaching people, Mr Harrison was serious about his role in increasing the amount of people registered to vote.
When the Herald met Mr Hutchinson on Friday, new arrivals and young voters were among those seeking information.
Adrian Martin, an area manager of Whangaparaoa, moved from England three years ago and was enrolling as he just got his New Zealand residency.
"This is my home now," said the 33-year-old. "I really want to have a say in what goes on."
Mt Eden student Joseph Mow, 18, was enrolling for the first time.
"The environment is an issue for me," he said. "I don't keep too up-to-date with politics, so I'll probably do some research into it before I vote."
