223,000 voters yet to put names on electoral roll

The equivalent of the population of five provincial cities in New Zealand have still not enrolled to vote for this year's elections.

The Electoral Enrolment Centre's national manager, Murray Wicks, says people have just three weeks to get on the printed electoral rolls used on election day, September 17.

The cut-off date, August 17, looms but more than 222,800 eligible voters, or just over 7 per cent, are still not enrolled.

"That's the same as everyone in Whangarei, Rotorua, New Plymouth, Nelson and Timaru combined not being able to vote," said Mr Wicks.

"To make sure your name is on the electoral roll used in polling places on election day you have to get enrolled now."

Someone not on the printed electoral roll will have to cast a special declaration vote, said Mr Wicks.

"This takes about five times as long as normal."

People who are on electoral rolls will also be mailed an EasyVote pack, which includes an EasyVote card, lists of where to vote, lists of parties and candidates and information about MMP.
