Police are trying to track down the mystery owner of a Roman glass bangle believed to be more than 2000 years old.
The jewellery was handed in to Palmerston North police, who believe it may have been taken from a museum or a collector in Waikato about 10 to 12 years ago.
Victoria University experts examined the blue glass bangle and dated it to the 1st Century AD.
Sergeant Paul Claridge of Palmerston North police said inquiries to date had failed to identify its legitimate owner.
"It's certainly the most unique piece of property I have ever dealt with.
"It's impossible to put a monetary value on an item of this kind, but I am sure it is very precious to someone and I am really keen to return it to where it belongs."
The bangle is mounted in an ornate silver frame with an engraved silver plaque.
Police would like to hear from anyone with information.
