Mazda MX-5s were here, there and everywhere at the Miyoshi Proving Ground in Japan, as more than 1600 turned up at the car's birthplace to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
Unveiled in 1989 at the Chicago auto show and designed as a modern take on such British classics as the MG-B and Triumph TR4-TR6, Mazda's two-seat, lightweight, open-top sports car quickly became a huge success. In the US, demand exceeded supply and vehicles sold at a premium, something rare in the land of the car deal.
About 2600 owners and enthusiasts gathered from all over Japan and overseas to join the celebration. A cry from Mazda's head of vehicle development, Seita Kanai, "The roadster is forever!" was met by thunderous applause from the spectators, an enthusiasm echoed right here at SuperWheels.
20 years on, the MX-5 still rules
