The British and Irish Lions rugby team arrived in New Zealand promising much after their undefeated tour of Australia when they won the last test in Brisbane 31-0.
But they came up against a legendary All Black team at the height of their powers and were beaten in each of the four test matches.
Key to victory was in the pack.
"The All Black forwards ... stirred the pride of their countrymen," wrote Herald rugby writer T.P. McLean after the first test at Carisbrook, which the All Blacks won 20-3.
"There was pride in their discipline, their physical fitness, their sensible grasp of tactical possibilities and, most of all, in their enormous output of combined strength."
