Flossy Maxwell was just 11 years old but she put her life on the line to save two girls from drowning in Judges Bay.
The first girl, who was aged about 7, got into difficulties when she realised she was out of her depth.
Flossy went to her aid and was bringing her to shore when she noticed the girl's sister was also in trouble.
Flossy kept both of their heads above water until her mother and a passing gentleman pulled them all to safety.
For coolness and bravery in one so young, Flossy Maxwell is our New Zealander of the Year for 1888.
