Wairarapa College student Stephen Scott caused a major boil-over when he won the Bowls Wairarapa men's open singles championship played at the Masterton Bowling Club's greens last weekend.
At just 18 and a member of the powerful Victoria club in Wellington Scott became the youngest player ever to win the event and his success followed hard on the heels of his finishing runner-up in the boys singles at the national secondary schools championships.
Scott met Graham Tindall of Masterton in the final and always looked to have the edge in a match which he won 21-12.
It was still a fine effort by Tindall to reach the decider as athletics has been his main focus in the past couple of seasons and his appearances on the bowling green have been limited as a result.
The only current member of the Wairarapa senior representative squad to reach the last four was Featherston's Les O'Donovan. He fell to Scott in the semis while Tindall accounted for his Masterton clubmate Dennis Richards there.
