KEY POINTS:
An 18-year-old man is dead after a crash at a speedway event in Central Otago last night.
The crash happened at about 7pm during a quad bike race at the Central Speedway track in Cromwell, Sergeant Steve Ereckson of Cromwell police said.
Two of the nine riders in a quad bike demonstration race crashed, resulting in the death of Luke Zion McCrostie, 18, of Alexandra.
The other rider, 27-year-old Brendon John Phillips from Winton, was transported to Dunstan Hospital by ambulance then flown to Dunedin Hospital with abdominal and pelvic injuries.
Mr Ereckson said paramedics, doctors and ambulance staff were all at the speedway event and were very quickly on the scene.
The cause of the crash was being investigated by police on behalf of the coroner, he said.
