Timaru police are concerned about the number of youth drink-drivers, with one 17-year-old caught seven times the legal breath alcohol limit.
The first of three youths stopped on the weekend was a 17-year-old who blew 1162 micrograms per litre of breath, which is seven times the legal youth limit of 150mcg, after he was pulled over at 11.50pm on Friday, senior sergeant Mark Offen, said.
A 16-year-old and a 18-year-old were also caught driving while over the limit early on Saturday morning.
Mr Offen said the 17-year-old's breath test result raised a number of questions and it was unusual to see such a high reading.
A local health worker told the Timaru Herald it was lucky police caught the youths before they either killed themselves or others.
