Masterton District councillors have agreed to upgrade or replace the heating at the Genesis Energy Recreation Centre - but the full cost is not known.
A reported to the policy and finance committee meeting on Wednesday recommended spending $16,000 to further investigate and price options and make provision in the 2014/15 budget for the preferred option.
Assets and operations manager David Hopman said the pumps failed last year, and he outlined a series of options to stop it happening again.
These included installing new heat pumps and controls, with an option of adding run-around coils and installing an additional wood pellet heater.
"We basically replace them now, wait until they're broken and scramble to replace them, or plan to replace them in 2015," he said. Councillor Pip Hannon suggested looking into solar power but Mr Hopman said that was not viable at the moment.
