About 15,000 people living in New Zealand will be affected by new United States immigration rules coming into force next year.
The rules mean all applicants for non-immigrant visas will need an interview.
Most New Zealanders qualify for a visa waiver programme, meaning the new rules will affect about 15,000 people living in New Zealand.
From January 22, applicants must make appointments for visa interviews, which will all be conducted at the US consulate in Auckland, a US Embassy statement said today.
An appointment system was needed to deal with the rising number of travellers visiting the consulate, the Wellington-based embassy said.
