A 15-year-old Matamata girl remains in critical condition following emergency surgery after falling 4m onto rocks while walking on Leisure Island, near Mount Maunganui.
Trustpower TECT rescue helicopter pilot Liam Brettkelly said the girl sustained head injuries and was flown to Auckland City Hospital, arriving at 5pm last night.
She underwent emergency surgery and remained in a critical condition.
Mr Brettkelly said the girl had been walking on the island as part of a church youth group and fell down the rocks at about 1pm.
